Backpacking 101
Backpacking 101 is a beginner-friendly class designed to help you feel confident and prepared to venture beyond the trailhead and spend a night (or more) in the backcountry.
Whether you’re brand new to the idea or have been day hiking and are ready to level up, this class will give you the foundational knowledge, skills, and encouragement you need to take your first overnight trip.
We’ll cover topics like:
Gear basics: what you really need (and what you don’t)
How to pack a backpack
Food and water planning
Trail safety and Leave No Trace principles
Finding campsites and reading maps
Tips for comfort, confidence, and joy on the trail

Backpacking Skills Practice: Hands on learninG
Already have your gear, but feeling a little uncertain? This follow-up to Backpacking 101 is a hands-on, outdoor-based class where you’ll get to practice the essential skills you need for a successful overnight trip — no experience necessary, just curiosity and a willingness to learn.
We’ll roll up our sleeves and walk through:
How to set up and break down a tent
Using a backpacking stove safely to boil water or cook a simple meal
How to filter and purify water in the backcountry
Packing and organizing your backpack for balance and accessibility
Proper sanitation and Leave No Trace bathroom practices
Tips for sleeping comfortably and troubleshooting common challenges
This class takes place outdoors, so you’ll get real-world practice and build confidence before heading into the backcountry on your own or with a group.
